Public Statement from Bridges to Belonging Denouncing Hate Crimes and Supporting the 2SLGBQTIA+ Community
Bridges to Belonging is committed to fostering a community that values and embraces diversity,
inclusivity, and equality. We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every individual. We are
deeply committed to building communities where everyone can live as their most authentic selves, express themselves freely, and thrive without fear of harm or discrimination.
It is with profound sadness that we address the recent act of violence that occurred at the University of
Waterloo. Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrific attack, their families, friends, and the
students traumatized by this act of hate and aggression, acknowledging the harm and grief they are
experiencing.
Today, we stand united in denouncing all acts of hate, oppression, and discrimination against any and all
community members.
We believe everyone has the right to self-expression, safety, security, contribution, and a sense of
belonging. This is the true meaning of community.
It is incumbent upon each of us to take personal responsibility in ensuring that everyone feels safe and
secure. We encourage community members to examine their own biases, challenge stereotypes, and to
work together to dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate hate and discrimination. By engaging in
respectful dialogue, educating ourselves and others, and fostering an inclusive culture, we can foster an
environment where everyone can live authentically and express themselves without fear.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” We must recognize that our individual identities are interconnected, and by embracing our shared humanity, we can build a community that celebrates diversity and cultivates understanding, acceptance, and empathy.

combating hate crimes and fostering an atmosphere of acceptance and support. Together, we can
